Interested in growing cannabis for recreational purpose in Canada, a cultivation license from Health Canada is required. Health Canada permits both indoors and outdoors cultivation of cannabis. You can apply for the following licenses depending on your business.

Cultivation LicenSe

A cultivation license from Health Canada is required if you are interested in growing Cannabis for recreational purposes in Canada. Health Canada permits both indoors and outdoors cultivation of Cannabis.

Prior to applying for a cultivation Licence, a potential Licensed producer should make sure they meet all the requirements under Cannabis Act and its regulations. (Refer to: Applying for Licence under the Cannabis Act and its regulations, what you need to know).

You will be required to have a facility compliant with the cannabis Act and its regulations with regards to physical security and Good production practices (GPP).

They will also need key individuals in the facility like Master grower, head of security and a responsible person having sufficient knowledge of the Cannabis regulations according to their activities.

You will be required to have a fully built facility compliant with the cannabis Act and its regulations with regards to physical security and Good Production Practices (GPP).

The cultivation licence class is further divided into three sub-classes.

 Class: Cultivation

Subclass: Micro-cultivation, Standard Cultivation, Nursery License

Micro-Cultivation

This will be the License if prospective grower is seeking to grow a smaller yield. Micro-cultivators are limited to growing within a small grow area (“canopy area”) of no more than 200 square meters. There physical security requirements differ from other sub-classes in this licence class.

Standard Cultivation

This will be the License if a prospective grower is seeking to grow a larger yield. Standard cultivators are not limited to growing within a definite grow area size. There physical security requirements is more stringent from all other sub-classes in this licence class.

Nursery License

Prospective growers interested in selling cannabis plant clones and seeds. License producer holding this License can produce cannabis plant clones and seeds for sale to other cultivators and processors for packaging and sale.

This Licence class, i.e., Cultivation licence restricts the sale of cannabis products to provincial retail stores they are limited to sell their products to another Licensed producer only.
